  • For those patients with total joint replacements, there has been an update from the American Dental Assocation (ADA) regarding the necessity for antibiotics before dental appointments. A panel of researchers and dental professionals reviewed the literature that was available regarding the subject, and they determined that there was no association between dental work and prosthetic joint infection. As a result, the ADA no longer recommends the use of antibiotics before dental work for those who have prosthetic joint replacements.

For this reason, we will no longer be requiring the use of such antibiotics for the majority of our patients with joint replacements. We encourage you to speak with your orthopaedic surgeons if you have any concerns regarding this new information. If you would like to read the recommendations from the ADA, you can click these links.

  • Recently, a sales representative demonstrated The Onset Approach from Onpharma®, which allows us to add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to our anesthetic. It is used to change the pH of our anesthetic and make it work much faster. We tried it on four of our patients that do not get numb from local anesthetic; of those four patients, three got "comfortably numb". So if you are one of those patients who has difficulty getting numb before a procedure, please speak up. We may have the solution!

  • Wouldn't it be nice to know whether or not you were at a higher risk for dental decay? What if there was a way you could know if you were more likely than the next person to get a cavity? We have begun to test a new product that uses saliva and a special immunochromatography process to help identify whether or not you have a high number of Streptococcus Mutans, or SM for short. Why test for SM? SM are main bacteria involved in the early-cavity process, and identifying that a person has a large number of SM is related to the risk that they have in getting new cavities. Simply put, the higher the amount of SM that a person carries, the higher their risk of cavities. We are working now on a testing protocol, and we look forward to providing you with more information in the near future.
